Impending Dolor

Impending Dolor

This is probably the most make-up I have ever worn since that night in 6th grade when I played the ice witch in a play and the mother of the daughter of the witch the next night deliberately made my make-up look like Gene Simmons so I wouldn't be prettier than her daughter (who, consequently, got glittery princess make up the next night). it was horrifying.

On Addicted, we're doing themed pictures and the first theme is 50's style sims. So I dressed up Arianna(typical of me right?) I think she looks pretty accurate looking from that era but she looks more like one of those pin-up girls of that time. This picture(and the billion others i took before deciding on this one) was fun to take. =)

The Girl Who Fell from the Sky

Rachel, the daughter of a danish mother and a black G.I., becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy after a fateful morning on their Chicago rooftop.

Forced to move to a new city, with her strict African American grandmother as her guardian, Rachel is thrust for the first time into a mostly black community, where her light brown skin, blue eyes, and beauty bring a constant stream of attention her way. It’s there, as she grows up and tries to swallow her grief, that she comes to understand how the mystery and tragedy of her mother might be connected to her own uncertain identity.

This searing and heartwrenching portrait of a young biracial girl dealing with society’s ideas of race and class is the winner of the Bellwether Prize for best fiction manuscript addressing issues of social justice.

Amazon Best Books of the Month, February 2010: Early on in The Girl Who Fell from the Sky, Rachel Morse (the girl in question) wonders about being "tender-headed." It's how her grandmother chides her for wincing at having her hair brushed, but it's also a way of understanding how Rachel grapples with the world in which she landed. Her parents, a Danish woman and an African-American G.I., tried to hold her and her siblings aloft from questions of race, and their failure there is both tragic and tenderly wrought. After sustaining an unimaginable trauma, Rachel resumes her life as a black girl, an identity she quickly learns to adopt but at heart is always reconciling with the life she knew before. Heidi W. Durrow bolsters her story with a chorus of voices that often see what Rachel can't--this is particularly true in the case of Brick, the only witness to her fall. There's a poetry to these characters that draws you into their lives, making for a beautiful and earnest coming-of-age novel that speaks as eloquently to teens as it does to adults. --Anne Bartholomew

Eriashi

Eriashi

Well, the fashion show was a huge success, now it's time for the photo shoot! Unfortunately the light wasn't he best today (it was kind of overcast) and not all the models were able to stay for the photoshoot, but we had a good time nonetheless.

I didn't get many shots of our geiko getting dressed today, but I made sure to take a lot of shots of her at the photo shoot. I wanted so many shots of her partly because she did such an amazing job playing the part of a geiko. Not only did she look amazing in the costume, she knew how to move in kimono to give off that timeless iki air. Dare I say, she knew how to move like a geiko.

This shot is actually a candid shot of her. The light was falling across her eriashi so perfectly, and the colour od her sensu was just perfect against her kimono. Eriashi is the portion left unpainted on the back of the geiko's neck. To the Japanese, the back of a woman's neck was supposed to be the most sensual, visible part of her body while she wears a kimono. Geiko dress to enhance this, and I think this shot shows that beautifully. This image reminds me of old woodblocks of ancient beauties demurely adjusting thier hair.

The Heian Princess

The Heian Princess

Well, the fashion show was a huge success, now it's time for the photo shoot! Unfortunately the light wasn't he best today (it was kind of overcast) and not all the models were able to stay for the photoshoot, but we had a good time nonetheless.

Here, we have a shot of our Princess in Junihitoe. This costume harks back to the Heian Period (794 -1185)

The junihitoe is a 12 layered robe which is one of the precurors of the modern day kimono. In order to save out model from heat stroke, the outfit she is wearing is not actually 12 layers, but rather has flase layers at the sleeves, collar and hem. Our noble woman also wears nagabakama: long pleated pants that drape passed her feet. She must slide around one them in order to walk. Don't worry, this costume was not allowed to touch the ground here. We actually had a tarp set up on which the models with trailing kimono could stand. It's thanks to some epic photoshop skils, that you can't see those tarps. :)

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaame!

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaame!

I live basically in downtown Denver (I don't want to say my *exact* neighborhood as I don't want any weird stalkers! Hah) and so it is all street parking. I live in a converted Victorian so it is not like there is a driveway and garages seem to be for the newer buildings or nicer ones. My building is not crappy but I was definitely looking for CHEAP when I moved ;-)

Parking is a premium, obviously. I DO get a parking sticker so I can park in places most others cannot, but unless I go straight there from work say (which I pretty much never do, even if I do not spend the night at Dave's I usually go over there after work), there is no way.

My 2 favorite places to park is in the loading zone right smack in front of my front door, or in this lot in the alley behind my building which says 'private parking' but for the life of me I cannot figure out who it belongs to, as the other buildings DO have underground garages.

I figured I would be pushing my luck, especially since it seems I have been spending a LOT more nights at my place lately. Thing is, the loading zone is enough for 2 cars and there are ALWAYS people there at night.

So this morning I was loading up my car and I saw a cop sticking this parking ticket on my window. Lame! What is funny (but not really) is I *was* loading my car - I had walked out with a suitcase, my big makeup train case, laptop bag, weekend bag, and bag of dirty laundry...and the cop SAW me with it, and sat there and watched me load my car!

I was complaining about it to my friend at work who used to be a cop and he looked at me like I was the stupidest person and said the loading zone is for big trucks, not people who need to load stuff in their car. Um...I never knew that. The ticket is only $20 but I am still somewhat irked and I think I might go down and contest it just to be an ass because the office downtown is only a few blocks from my place.

Oh well though, at $20 bucks a pop if I am going to be spending this much time at my apartment I will still park there instead of parking several blocks away! I love my neighborhood and it is fun and trendy and all that but there are some pretty sketchy parts in it too and while I am not scared, I am also not stupid and will park close and illegally any day over legally and far and walk alone in the dark.

My kawaii case!!!

My kawaii case!!!

This case used to be a huge display case in my boutique. I brought it home when I closed my shop, in hopes I could fit some of my kawaii collection inside.

Lipstick

Lipstick

Lipstick in some shape or form has been around for a long time and has always been a part of the fashion statement. History tells us that ancient Egyptians used henna to paint their lips. According to Meg Cohen Ragas and Karen Kozlowski in their book, "Read My Lips: A Cultural History of Lipstick," a reddish purple mercuric plant dye called fucus--algin, 0.01% iodine, and some bromine mannite--was used for lip rouge. Little did the ancient Egyptians know that it was potentially poisonous--perhaps the original kiss of death.

Although no self-respecting Egyptian would leave home without it, makeup has not always held an accepted place in society. In fact, it has traveled a bumpy road to acceptance.

According to Ragas and Kozlowski, Thomas Hall, an English pastor and author of the "Loathsomeness of Long Haire" (1653), led a movement declaring that face painting was "the devil's work" and that women who put brush to mouth were trying to "ensnare others and to kindle a fire and flame of lust in the hearts of those who cast their eyes upon them." In 1770, the British Parliament passed a law condemning lipstick, stating that "women found guilty of seducing men into matrimony by a cosmetic means could be tried for witchcraft."

Jessica Pallingston points out in her book, "Lipstick," that in the 1800s, Queen Victoria publicly declared makeup impolite. It was viewed as vulgar and something that was worn by actors and prostitutes. Makeup took a backseat, and paleness became vogue for almost a century.

Putting on a happy face during World War II, aided by the movie industry, gave lipstick and face powder respectability. It became the patriotic duty of female citizens to "put their face on." In the 1930s, leaders in the industry such as Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden opened their first beauty parlors, offering services that ranged from facial massages to hair dressing to makeup tips.

Neon Magazine

Neon Magazine

I used a pink gradient for the background. I copy and pasted Katy Perry, using the magic wand to get rid of the extra white space that was around her. I typed the letters N,E,O & N on different layers and changed the colors of the text I put outer glow and drop shadow on these letters and made them 80pt font. For the "Pretty Little Liars" text I changed the I used the color picker to make the text the same color as Troian's shirt. I also added the effect of satin to the letters. After that I added the text "Plus our interview with.." using white as the color and drop shadow as an effect. Fashion Do's and Don'ts was in 72p font and bold. I color picked from the N on neon to write this text. I added drop shadow also. For the "Katy Perry" text I just added outer glow and made the text the same pink as her lipstick color. I used the shape tool to make a sqaure and rectangle box to make Bruno MArs and Troian stand out. I also used the magic wand on both of their pictures, getting rid of uneeded space. After I used the move tool to place them inside the boxes. I found a barcode off the internet and simply pasted it on the bottom right of the magazine. I found a picture of Ashton Kutcher and used the magic wand to delete his background. I put "101 things.." over that picture to go with the theme. I made the text purple like Katys shirt and I also included an outer glow. "Makeup Tips form Mila Kunis"; I used the line tool to make Makeup Tips stand out I changed Mila's name to the same color as as her dress so the colors collaberated. Lastly I made the "Magazine" text black using cursive font and added an outer glow then I put Feburary 2011 at the top of the left side in a simple black font 14pt.
